Mentoring

Honors Students

I have supervised 12 Honors theses, with the majority of my supervisees going on to earn PhDs in clinical psychology or other disciplines (e.g., Biostatistics) or medical degrees (MDs). My first Honors student (Elizabeth Brestan-Knight) is the Alma Holladay Endowed Professor of Psychology at Auburn University. Another (Josh Weinstock) earned a PhD in Biostatistics at University of Michigan (one of the top programs in the world), was a postdoctoral fellow in Genetics at Stanford and at Johns Hopkins, and has recently joined the faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Genetics at Emory. Another (Jonathon Cohen) is Associate Professor of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine (see a recent profile of him in which he describes his experiences working in my lab at this link).

Graduate Students

I have supervised 19 Master’s students and 10 dissertations, also serving on many other committees. The majority of my PhD students have progressed to research-oriented postdoctoral fellowships, with 4 in faculty positions. Among these, Soo Rhee is an Associate Professor and Director of the Clinical Psychology program at University of Colorado Boulder, and Ian Gizer is an Associate Professor in the Clinical Psychology program in Department of Psychology at University of Missouri. Kelly Harrington is Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School, while Devon LoParo is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine. In addition to these PhD students who have pursued academic positions in Departments of Psychology or Psychiatry, several of my other students hold high-level administrative and research positions in governmental agencies or industry. Randy Elder is Director of the Office of Science Quality within the Office of Science at the CDC. Amber Singh is Associate Director of the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Finally, Courtney Lyding is People Analytics Senior Research Consultant at The Coca-Cola Company, in which she makes extensive use of the data analytic skills she developed in my lab. I’m also proud that almost all of my PhD students published while in my lab, and of those almost all have first-authored a citation classic (a publication with > 100 citations).

Postdoctoral Fellows and Junior Faculty

In addition to mentoring these graduate students, I also have served as an informal mentor or co-mentor to several junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows, including Justin Luningham, Assistant Professor at Texas Christian University, James Li, A. A. Alexander Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at University of Wisconsin, Marie-Pier LaRose at University of Turku in Finland, Hasse Walum, Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory Medical School, and Rohan Palmer, Pete Hitchcock, & Vanessa Brown in the Emory Psychology Department.
